Residents demand municipal action
Widespread violations of hygiene and cleanliness rules by meat sellers have sparked concerns among residents in Navi Mumbai, prompting a call for immediate inspections and strict actions against the erring vendors.
Numerous meat vendors in the city have been observed openly hanging meat, a practice deemed unsightly and offensive by many residents. The unhygienic practice of leaving meat exposed leads to spoilage within a few hours, attracting flies and posing health risks to consumers. Proper disposal of leftover meat is often neglected, contributing to unsanitary conditions in the shops. Despite regulations under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act instructing shopkeepers to maintain cleanliness, many meat sellers in the city are found in violation of these rules.
The Municipal’s Veterinary Department is entrusted with the responsibility of taking action against such violators. However, it appears that their efforts have been inadequate. The city hosts thousands of meat shops, raising doubts about the registration and licensing status of the majority of these establishments.
Residents are now demanding thorough inspections and strict actions against those flouting the rules. Dr. Sriram Pawar, Veterinary Medical Officer, was contacted for a response but did not provide any comments on the matter.
Adding to the chorus of concern, Willeen Kashinath Patil, President of the Village Devi Utsav Samiti (N.) in Kopari village, emphasized the need for timely and assertive action by the Municipal Corporation to curb the open selling of meat, threatening strong protests if necessary measures are not taken promptly.
