On World Environment Day, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) organised a series of initiatives aimed at fostering environmental consciousness and community engagement. Led by Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde, various departments undertook cleanliness campaigns and prioritized the planting of indigenous trees, with a strong emphasis on public participation.
Under the guidance of the Garden Department, a comprehensive action plan was formulated to plant over 35 thousand native saplings across all eight divisions of Navi Mumbai. Indigenous trees such as Tamarind, Mohgana Parijat, Sitafal, Jambhul, Nimboo, Mango, and Bamboo were meticulously planted to enhance the biodiversity of the region.
The endeavour saw enthusiastic involvement from citizens, particularly women, students, and senior citizens, who actively participated in tree plantation and cleanliness campaigns at various locations. Notable efforts included a special cleaning drive in the forest area, where approximately 100 kg of plastic and similar waste was collected through joint efforts involving the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Henkel Group, and college NSS students.
Additionally, tree plantation drives were organized in front of the Nerul police station and Jewel of Navi Mumbai, with support from educational institutions and local residents. The participation of NCC and NSS students from Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil College Vashi further underscored the collective commitment to environmental conservation.
At Sitaram Master Udyan in Sanpada, a collaborative effort between senior citizen associations, college students, and residents resulted in both tree plantation and cleanliness activities. Asian Paints contributed to the initiative by distributing circular Gavaskar caps to sanitation workers, acknowledging their dedication to cleanliness efforts.
The day's activities culminated in a collective pledge to the 'Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan,' symbolizing a shared commitment to safeguarding the environment for future generations.
