Pakistan edge past winless Ireland in a inconsequential final Group A match

For the second time in as many days wet outfield due to heavy overnight rains at the Central Broward Park stadium, Florida resulted in the abandonment of the India vs Canada Group A game on Saturday, without a ball being bowled due to wet outfield. Both teams were awarded a point each.

The unbeaten Indian team led by Rohit Sharma which had already qualified for the next round as Group A topper by winning all the three low scoring matches played so far, starting with an 8-wicket victory over Ireland before registering a narrow six-run win against arch rivals Pakistan. In their third game, the 2007 champions eased past spirited United States by 7-wickets.

 India will next take on Group C topper Afghanistan at Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados on 20 June in a Super 8 Group 1 league match.  Canada who came in third with a sole victory against Ireland bow out of the tourney.

Earlier on Friday the match between co-host USA and Ireland which too got abandoned, due to incessant rains in their final Group A league game resulting in them occupying the second spot with fiv e, too qualified for the Super 8 stage and will play South Africa Group 2 league match at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua on 19 June.

On the other hand an all-round performance by Shaheen Afridi (3/22) and a crucial unbeaten 13 in presence of his skipper Babar Azam  who remained not out on 32, saw Pakistan squeeze  a narrow three-wicket win against a winless Ireland in Florida on Sunday, in what was their final Group A contest of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Chasing a meager target of 107 run in the inconsequential match , the  Ireland bowlers  led by Barry McCarthy (3/15) and Curtis Campher (2/2) took wickets at regular intervals, before their rivals overhauled the target with seven balls to spare in the end. Both the teams failed to make the cut for the Super 8 stage
