With the onset of summer and the month of Ramadan, the demand for watermelons has surged in the APMC market in Navi Mumbai. The increasing heat along with the desire for something refreshing during Ramadan has contributed to this rise in demand. In the wholesale market, prices range from 8 to 12 rupees per kilogram, while in the retails market, prices vary from 40 to 200 rupees depending on the size.

The rising temperatures have led to an increase in consumer demand for watermelons. As the summer intensifies, the demand for juicy fruits also rises. Currently, there is a growing demand for watermelons. Approximately twenty-five to thirty trucks of watermelons are arriving at the market daily. Each truck carries ten to twelve quintals of goods. These watermelons are sourced from Solapur, Nagar, and Sangli. The months of March, April, and May are the peak seasons for watermelons. During this time, fifty to sixty trucks of fresh produce arrive at the market. However, with the onset of Ramadan, the demand has further increased.

“In the wholesale market, watermelons are priced between 8 to 12 rupees per kilogram, while in the retail market, they are sold at higher prices. With the season already underway, the demand for watermelons has started to rise. Consequently, their prices have also increased. However, with the increase in supply, prices are expected to stabilize”, said Shivajirao Chavan, a trader.

Speaking further, Chavan said, “Sugar King, a variety of watermelon is always in demand. Large, round with extreme sweetness, this variety attracts customers. Apart from customers, even juice centre owners prefer this variety for its distinct red colour and sweetness.”
