In a historic milestone for Mumbai's transportation landscape, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport Undertaking (BEST) commemorated 150 years of service evolution today. From its humble beginnings in the 17th century to its modern-day commitment to environmental sustainability, the journey of BEST reflects the dynamic growth of Mumbai as a metropolis.
The curtain fell on Mumbai’s tram era on March 31, 1964, as the final tram journey, Route Number 5, made its way from Porbandar to Dadar TT, concluding an era of horse-drawn transportation. However, this marked the beginning of a new chapter for BEST, as the undertaking embraced innovation and diversity in its fleet.
Over the years, BEST expanded its services to include a variety of buses, ranging from double-deckers to air-conditioned single-deckers. Noteworthy among them were the “Dumjali” trams, which operated on Mumbai's streets from 1937, providing commuters with an iconic mode of transport.
Today, as BEST charts its course towards a greener future, the focus is on transitioning to an all-electric fleet by 2025. This commitment to environmental sustainability underscores BEST's dedication to serving the city while minimizing its carbon footprint.
Reflecting on Mumbai's transportation history, the advent of motor buses in 1926 marked a significant milestone, signalling the shift towards modernization and efficiency. Initially connecting Afghan Church to Crawford Market, the motor bus service gradually expanded to cater to areas beyond the city limits, meeting the growing demand for public transport.

As Mumbai’s population burgeoned over the years, so did the need for efficient transportation solutions. The establishment of the Bombay Electric Supply and Transportation Company Limited in 1905 laid the foundation for what would become the backbone of Mumbai's public transport system.
