Dombivli: In a glaring example of government apathy and lack of monsoon preparedness, the Bhaji Market area in F Ward, located on the eastern side of Dombivli railway station, witnessed severe waterlogging due to heavy rains.
The rains which lasted barely 15 to 20 minutes caused inundation of the roads, disrupting the movement of pedestrians and vendors. Within minutes, the usually busy vegetable market was under a sea of water.
Acting swiftly, assistant commissioner of F Ward, Hema Mumbarkar, arrived at the scene along with other municipal officials. Upon inspection, they found that several vegetable vendors had blocked vital drainage points with wooden planks, plastic sheets, and crates—materials used to protect their produce from the rain. This obstruction led to the choking of gutters and water logging in the area.
Without delay, the municipal staff cleared the debris and makeshift barriers, allowing the water to recede smoothly. Within a short time, normalcy was restored.
Residents, however, were quick to voice their concerns. “If this is the condition after just one downpour, what will happen during the peak monsoon?” said a local vendor. Several shopkeepers and customers were seen discussing how this early sign of chaos must serve as a wake-up call for both authorities and citizens.
Locals emphasized the need for regular cleaning of drains and strict instructions for vendors to avoid blocking them. “This has become a yearly issue. We hope it doesn't turn into a bigger disaster this monsoon,” said another resident.
The incident has sparked fresh conversations about monsoon readiness in Dombivli. While the civic body's quick action deserves appreciation, residents are now watching closely to see if long-term preventive measures will follow.
