Dead fish found floating in Kharghar waterbody spark outcry among environmental activists

The sight of several dead fish floating in the waterbody of sector 17 in Kharghar in the morning on 7th May, 2024 has once again ignited outrage among environmental activists. The blockage of tidal water flow in this mangrove area adjacent to the creek has transformed the water channel into a state of decay, potentially leading to the demise of aquatic life, as highlighted by Environment activist and Animal Welfare Officer, Seema Tank.

Tank emphasized the urgency of addressing the situation, stating, "The blockade of tidal water flow at this mangrove area near the creek has turned the water channel into a decomposing state, and that might be the cause behind the death of those fishes."

Expressing her concern, Tank reiterated the importance of preserving the water channel, which serves as a vital lifeline for the extensive mangrove belt in sector 16-17 of Kharghar and serves as a significant habitat for aquatic species. She lamented, "Today morning dead fishes were seen floating in the waterbody of sec 16 Kharghar Navi Mumbai. The water level in the creekside where there are mangroves has been seen depleting again. This recurring phenomenon proves that this is being done deliberately to destroy mangroves."

Despite Tank's persistent efforts to draw attention to the issue through print media, no tangible action has been taken by the civic authorities to address the situation and alleviate the blockade hindering the mangrove ecosystem. Tank's frustration was palpable as she remarked, "If today's death of many fishes could not awaken them, then this may prove that this unfortunate death and the sorry state of that mangrove area is a completely deliberate crime supported by civic authorities."

Despite registering a complaint on May 1, 2024, with the Mangrove Redressal Grievance Cell via the Mangrove Suraksha App (complaint ID 205), Tank highlighted the lack of resolution from the authorities, exacerbating the plight of the mangrove ecosystem and its inhabitants.
