Thane: A spectacular cultural display has taken shape at Gaondevi Maidan, where a massive 90-foot Maharangoli has been created to mark 150 years of the iconic national song “Vande Mataram.” The initiative, organised by Sanskar Bharati (Konkan region) along with local cultural groups, beautifully blends patriotism with artistic expression.
The rangoli, spread across a 90x90-foot area, was crafted by a team of 35 skilled artists using nearly 250 kilograms of rangoli powder and 500 kilograms of colours. The artwork vividly captures the legacy of “Vande Mataram,” composed by Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay. It prominently features Bharat Mata, a portrait of the composer, verses from the song, and traditional motifs like the swastika symbolising auspiciousness.
This grand display is part of a tradition that has been upheld for over 25 years, where large-scale rangolis are designed annually to celebrate themes of national and cultural importance. The event is also linked to a welcome procession organised by Shri Kaupineshwar Cultural Trust, which hosts several cultural activities in the lead-up to the main celebration.
In addition to the Maharangoli, visitors can explore a range of exhibitions at the venue. A special showcase commemorates 75 years of the Indian Constitution through artistic interpretations and calligraphy of its key provisions. Replicas of 12 UNESCO-recognised forts offer insight into India’s architectural heritage. Other attractions include creative displays by hobby groups, a “Chhandotsav” exhibition of handmade crafts, and a photography exhibit highlighting the Gudi Padwa festival.
The event was inaugurated by Mayor Sharmila Pimpalolkar, who commended the organisers and artists for celebrating India’s rich cultural heritage and encouraging community participation.
