The Save Navi Mumbai Environment Group has voiced strong condemnation against the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) for filing a complaint at the NRI Police Station targeting the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC). This action follows NMMC's initiative to address blockages affecting the intertidal water flow at DPS Lake.
Bharat Bhushan Gupta, a member of the group, expressed their concern through a legal notice sent by LawGlobal Advocates to key authorities, including the Chief Minister and Deputy CM. Gupta stated, "We urge the Chief Minister to take action against CIDCO officials responsible for this unwarranted complaint against NMMC."
Founder Sunil Agarwal added, "CIDCO's actions run counter to the Bombay High Court's directive to protect DPS Lake, endangering its ecosystem, including the flamingo habitat."
The legal notice, dated June 18, 2024, highlights CIDCO's alleged manipulation of high tide water at DPS Lake to facilitate future land development, in violation of Supreme Court orders safeguarding the lake as a protected area.
In response, LawGlobal Advocates disputed CIDCO's claim that the DPS Lake issue is sub judice, asserting the need for accountability regarding the Executive Engineer's actions. Following Deputy CM's intervention, the matter has been forwarded to the State Home Department for thorough investigation.
Agarwal affirmed their intent to pursue legal action, stating, "If not resolved promptly, we are prepared to file a Public Interest Litigation to uphold environmental protections for DPS Lake."
