Blazing scrap warehouse fire in Uran finally extinguished after 24-hour battle

A fierce fire that erupted at a scrap warehouse in Bori Pakhadi on Friday morning around 10:45 AM has been successfully extinguished after relentless fire fighting efforts spanning an entire day. The massive fire, which posed a significant challenge to the local fire brigade, necessitated the use of over 4 lakh litres of water from 40 tankers. The incident covered the area in smoke and darkness throughout the night, creating an unprecedented challenge for local residents.

Given the limited accessibility to the fire-affected area within the warehouse, the fire fighting personnel had to resort to unconventional methods, including climbing onto the building's roof to combat the blaze. Water from a nearby well and water channel within the city were also deployed in the fire fighting efforts.

Uran Taluka, located at the mouth of a volcano, houses central and state government naval arsenals, ONGC facilities, Bharat Gas installations, electricity distribution centres, and various chemical supply projects. In recent times, unauthorized warehouse owners have been frequently using government premises to store scraps and chemical materials, contributing to a surge in fire incidents in these crucial areas.

The incident on the 27th marked another chapter in the ongoing struggle, as local authorities and fire fighters joined forces to bring the blaze under control. Political and community figures, including Uran MLA Mahesh Baldi, social activists Santosh Pawar, Naresh Rahalkar, former mayor Nitin Patil, Dinesh Gharat, as well as agencies like CIDCO, JNPA Bandar, ONGC, and N.A.D, united their efforts in a tireless 24-hour battle against the fire.
