Badlapur: Heavy rains lashed Badlapur and Ambernath on May 26 morning, causing waterlogging, traffic disruption and power outages. Badlapur received 160 mm of rain in just four hours from 5 am.
Rains in Karjat and Matheran had led the Ulhas river to swell to 16.46 mtr mark by 11 am, just shy of the danger level of 16.50 mtr at Bhivpuri. Low lying areas like Chowpatty and Wangani Road in Badlapur West were submerged. A vehicle in Belavli subway was also submerged due to floodwaters.
Heavy rain had led to waterlogging of several roads in Ambernath. The rising water level in Badlapur's Sonivali area forced the fire brigade to start evacuation and shift residents to safer places.
Train services were also affected by waterlogging on the tracks near Badlapur station at 8:30 am, causing delays. Power supply was also disrupted in many areas of Badlapur, Ambernath and nearby areas.
With water levels rising steadily, municipal officials and fire brigade personnel have been put on high alert in Badlapur. The municipal council has urged the public to remain on alert.
Chief Officer Maruti Gaikwad reviewed the situation along with civic officials and assured the citizens that both municipal and fire brigade teams were fully prepared to handle any rain-related eventuality.
In Ulhasnagar, a big tree fell near Sindhu National High School damaging several vehicles. Fortunately, no loss of life was reported. Civic officials have appealed to citizens to venture out only if absolutely necessary.
