Aishwarya takes the Gita to Cannes

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan drew worldwide attention at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival as she transitioned from timeless traditional wear to a bold, modern couture look. After stunning in a richly woven Banarasi saree by Manish Malhotra, the Bollywood icon returned to the red carpet in a cosmic-themed creation by designer Gaurav Gupta. This striking ensemble seamlessly fused modern sculptural design with elements of Indian spirituality, making a powerful cultural and fashion statement on the international stage.

The gown, titled Heiress of Calm, was a sculptural masterpiece that exemplified Gaurav Gupta’s signature style. Crafted in a dramatic corset silhouette, the black gown featured an interplay of silver, gold, charcoal, and black hues, embroidered into abstract cosmic motifs. These were further embellished with delicate micro-glass crystals, creating a reflective, textured finish that added to the gown’s multidimensional appeal. Gupta, known for his conceptual designs, described the creation as a representation of calmness in the chaos, a theme reflected both in its design and deeper symbolism.

However, the most compelling element of the look was not the gown itself but the accompanying cape. Aishwarya paired the ensemble with a handwoven silver Banarasi brocade cape, reflecting the depth of India’s traditional textile craftsmanship. The cape, flowing behind her on the red carpet, served as both a statement of elegance and a canvas for a profound spiritual message. Embroidered into the cape in fine detail was a Sanskrit shloka from the Bhagavad Gita, one of Hinduism’s most revered texts.

The verse read:
||
कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन।
मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते सङ्गोऽस्त्वकर्मणि ||
(Translation: "You have a right to perform your actions, but not to the fruits of those actions. Let not the fruits of action be your motive, nor let your attachment be to inaction.")

This spiritual invocation added a deeply personal and philosophical layer to her appearance, turning a fashion moment into a cultural narrative. It also underscored the actress's intention to represent not just Indian fashion, but Indian thought and heritage, on a global platform.

In terms of styling, Aishwarya opted for a minimalistic approach that let the outfit command full attention. She accessorized with just a pair of dangling earrings and a few statement diamond rings. Her makeup, however, brought bold drama, featuring a flawless matte base, shimmering eyeshadow, softly blushed cheeks, and striking red lips. Her voluminous hair was styled in loose, beachy waves, parted to one side.

Aishwarya’s appearance at Cannes 2025 was not only a display of haute couture but also a celebration of India’s cultural and spiritual essence, making her ensemble one of the most talked-about looks of the festival.
