The initiative aims to help people get drinking water during soaring temperature

With an aim to ensure people get timely water to drink during soaring temperatures, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), in collaboration with MCHI (Maharashtra Chamber of Housing Industry) and Samarth Bharat Vyaspeeth, has initiated the installation of temporary ‘Paani Matkas’ at 25 strategic locations within the municipal area.

The move comes as part of a comprehensive heat remediation plan formulated by the Municipal Corporation in conjunction with the Government of Maharashtra and the Council of Energy, Environment, and Water, aimed at addressing the adverse impacts of urbanization-induced heat in the city.

Commissioner Saurabh Rao has issued directives to ensure the swift implementation of measures to mitigate the heat crisis, emphasizing the importance of public awareness and preparedness. Acting upon these instructions, the Thane Municipal Corporation has installed large earthen pots at designated spots across the municipality.

Responding to the pressing need for clean drinking water during the scorching summer months, corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives have been leveraged to provide water supply facilities at these locations. Chief Environment Officer Manisha Pradhan highlighted that large water earthen pots and glasses have been placed at the designated sites, with arrangements made for the daily replenishment of clean drinking water.

The 25 locations where temporary water pumps have been installed include prominent areas such as Thane Station, Kopri Pool, Ice Factory, Jawahar Bagh, Ashar IT Park, Kisannagar School, and Ambika Nagar No. 3, among others.
