Thane flower markets bloom for Dussehra despite rain, prices soar high

Thane: Thane’s flower markets are bustling with activity as crowds gather ahead of Dussehra. Areas near Thane station, Jambhli Naka, and the main market are filled with vibrant flowers and the traditional golden Apta leaves. However, continuous rainfall in recent days has disrupted supplies, driving up prices. Despite this, buyers continue to throng the markets, and vendors report brisk business with steady cash flow.

Marigolds remain the most sought-after, with yellow, orange, red, and hybrid varieties priced between Rs 80 and Rs 150 per kg. Chrysanthemums, essential for Devi puja, are selling at Rs 100 to Rs 200 per kg. Other popular flowers include daisy, jasmine, Indian jasmine, champa (plumeria), gulchadi (Tuberose), roses, and golden champa.

Among this, jasmine and Indian jasmine are high in demand for making hair adornments. Marigold garlands cost around Rs 100 per meter, while decorative torans (door hangings) range from Rs 50 to Rs 100. The cost of basic essential herbs required for ritual, namely bel patra, tulsi (holy basil), and durva (Bermuda grass), has also increased.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, tribal sellers from Wada, Yeoor, Bhiwandi, Karjat, and Pankhand have come to the city with tribal decorations including door décor such as door hangings made of puffed rice, mango leaves, and seasonal flowers. While these sales provide them with a livelihood, many vendors say heavy rains have raised costs and affected earnings.

“Every year we make at least Rs 1500-Rs 2000 daily during the festive season and so we travel so far. However, this year, heavy rainfall has marred the entire business, the footfall has reduced, and troubles accessing the main city from the interiors of Thane have increased,” said Rohit Mane, a resident of Wada.
