Rise in vector-borne disease in Thane leads to an increase in demand for fruits

Thane: A surge in malaria and dengue cases has been reported in Thane following stagnant rainwater, which has created ideal conditions for mosquito breeding. Over the past four months, 621 malaria and 405 dengue cases have been recorded. The highest number of malaria cases was in August (243), while July saw the most dengue cases (156).

In response to the rising number of patients, there is an increased demand for immunity-boosting fruits like kiwi, dragon fruit, and papaya, as well as papaya leaves, which are believed to aid in recovery.

These fruits help replenish platelets and white blood cells, often depleted in dengue and malaria patients. Despite the surge in demand, prices have remained stable this year, thanks to an abundant supply, offering some relief to consumers,” said Dheeraj Gupta, a fruit vendor.

To combat the rising mosquito population, the municipal corporation is conducting fogging and insecticide spraying. Citizens are advised to take preventive measures like wearing full-body clothing, using mosquito repellents, and ensuring proper disposal of waste, especially plastic and water containers.

District Civil Surgeon Dr Kailas Pawar urged the citizens to avoid storing water and regularly clean drains to reduce breeding sites.
