Thane: There was a time when Govindas would chant "Govinda aala re" or "Mach gaya shor sari nagri re" as they moved from street to street, eager to scale Dahi Handis and demonstrate their athleticism and teamwork.
Today, that same spirit thrives in a more organised, competitive format—as seen in the launch of Pro Govinda League Season 3, which kicked off in Thane with electrifying qualifiers featuring 32 Govinda teams from across Maharashtra. The event set the stage for what promises to be the league’s most dynamic and expansive season yet.
Showcasing discipline, strength, and strategic teamwork, teams competed for a spot in the grand finale, scheduled from August 7–9, 2025, at Dome SVP, Mumbai. Layered human pyramids and salami performances highlighted the event, reflecting the athleticism and focus required for what is now recognized by the Maharashtra government as an official adventure sport.
This season, the league expands its footprint nationwide with a TV broadcast partner, brand tie-ups, and a growing fan base. What began as a cultural celebration is now a professionally managed league drawing national attention and commercial interest.
The top 16 teams from the qualifiers will move to the final round. Their performances demonstrated how far the sport has evolved in structure, visibility, and spectator appeal.
Among the notable attendees was Maharashtra Transport Minister and League Founder Pratap Sarnaik, who expressed strong support for the event and its mission to uplift youth through sport. The team auction, set for July 5, 2025, will add further excitement, as franchises acquire squads for the final face-off.
Behind this transformation is the leadership of Sarnaik and League president Purvesh Sarnaik, who have redefined Dahi Handi as a competitive platform for aspiring athletes.
“Our objective has always been to preserve the cultural soul of Dahi Handi while creating a professional platform for young Govindas to display their talent,” Purvesh said. “It’s a serious sport that demands strength, discipline, and teamwork.”
He also highlighted the league’s social impact: “Recognising it as a competitive sport gives youth a platform to grow, be recognised, and uplift their communities. A league of this scale also attracts brands, audiences, and long-term commercial opportunities.”
The season promises more big moments, including the upcoming announcement of a celebrity ambassador and appearances by renowned personalities, adding star power to the growing sport.
As anticipation builds for the finals, Pro Govinda League stands out not just as a sport but as a celebration of Maharashtra’s cultural spirit, blending tradition with professionalism. From narrow city lanes to a nationally televised event, the journey of Dahi Handi has entered a bold new era.
