Nerul: Residents of the NRI Complex in Seawoods, Nerul, have come together to celebrate Chhath Puja in a meaningful and unique way, transforming the complex’s fountain into a dedicated Chhath Ghat. Adorned with vibrant flowers, ribbons, and lights, the space will serve as the site for prayers to both the setting and rising sun on October 27 and 28, marking the festival with devotion and festive spirit.
Babita Chandra, a key member of the organising team, shared that 20 women from the 50 families in the complex, primarily from Bihar, are observing the Chhath fast this year. The initiative, which started eight years ago, was a response to overcrowding at Palm Beach Talao, with the fountain being designated as the symbolic water body for the rituals.
“This festival has become a cherished tradition, uniting our community and fostering a spirit of harmonious living,” Babita said. The five-day celebration will conclude on October 28, with women singing traditional Chhathi Maiya songs and distributing homemade Litti-Chokha as mahaprasad to all residents, symbolising shared devotion.
Meanwhile, the Navi Mumbai Bihar Association has organised the biggest Chhath Puja celebration in the city, at the West Bank of Palm Beach Talao, Nerul. With over a lakh devotees expected from Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad, the organisers have worked tirelessly to clean the pond's bank and create a welcoming environment for the participants. The 29th edition of the celebration is set to be a grand affair, supported by civic authorities and police.
When contacted about the civic arrangements for Chhath Puja, an official from the PRO department said, "NMMC is not playing any role in Chhath Puja preparation. Only cleaning staff will help in the post-event cleanup drive," as shared by the PRO.
In collaboration with “Karm Kaushal,” Hindi Samachar Patra, “The Intent” English Newspaper, and several entertainment companies, the celebration promises a series of events, including ‘Surya-gaan’ and Chhathi Maiya Geet for public entertainment. Other associations are also hosting celebrations at various ponds across Navi Mumbai, contributing to a citywide festive atmosphere.
