The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has taken a stern step by issuing court notices to individuals and businesses with outstanding property tax and water bills, both crucial revenue sources for the civic body. Additional Commissioner Sujata Dhole confirmed that these cases would be addressed through Lok Adalat, offering a platform for citizens to resolve grievances related to government facilities.
The National Lok Adalat is scheduled to take place on March 3 in Belapur, Navi Mumbai, where both pre-litigation and post-litigation disputes will be addressed. This inclusive approach encompasses citizens, businessmen, government and semi-government organizations, as well as industry groups.
Notices have been served to 947 property tax defaulters in Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, ranging from arrears of Rs. 75 thousand to Rs. 1 lakh. The expected recovery from these cases amounts to Rs. 9 crores. In the previous Lok Adalat, 1,950 notices were issued, leading to the recovery of over Rs. 38 lakhs.
The water supply department has also issued 1,136 notices to defaulters with arrears exceeding Rs. 50 thousand. Additional City Engineer Manoj Patil stated that a total of Rs. 41.53 crore dues are anticipated to be recovered through this initiative.
It is worth noting that the Local Self-Government Tax and Cess have been discontinued and have been replaced by the Goods and Services Tax (GST). Court notices have also been dispatched to traders in the municipal area who have not settled their dues for cess and local body tax.
