Belapur: Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde has ordered strict action against water wastage and construction-site pollution, directed the use of treated water for construction and cleaning, and called for tighter enforcement of firecracker restrictions ahead of Diwali.
At a review meeting, Shinde instructed special flying squads to intensify inspections and ensure effective water management amid drought-like conditions linked to El Niño. The water supply department must prepare a comprehensive plan for the coming period, with a special review meeting scheduled within two days. Construction sites, service centres and car-washing facilities must use treated water.
On air pollution, Shinde ordered close monitoring of all construction sites and immediate action against violations. The civic body’s own projects must follow the same standards, while officials must verify the installation of CCTV cameras at construction sites as directed by the court.
Ahead of Diwali, officials were told to enforce restrictions on noisy firecrackers, issue written instructions to sellers and conduct public awareness campaigns with the fire brigade.
Shinde also directed regular deep-cleaning drives using treated water on major roads, including the Sion-Panvel Highway and Thane-Belapur Road. Temporary fountains at busy junctions were suggested to control dust.
The meeting also reviewed public service delivery, grievance redressal, scholarship schemes, and healthcare and education facilities. Shinde directed officials to resolve citizens’ complaints promptly.
Additional Commissioners Sunil Pawar and Dr Rahul Gethe, Deputy Commissioner Bhagwat Doiphode, City Engineer Shirish Aradwad and other senior officials attended the meeting.
