More arrests made in APMC toilet allotment scam

Following the arrest of Sanjay Pansare, former director of the fruit market, in connection with the toilet scam case at the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) premises, the crime branch has now apprehended Shivnath Wagh. Both individuals were produced before the court at CBD Belapur on Thursday, where they were remanded to two-day police custody.

The investigation by the Financial Crimes Branch of the Navi Mumbai Police has unveiled a web of corruption, with directors and officers of the APMC Market allegedly flouting regulations by allocating various toilets on the premises to specific entities, including Maru Seva Sangh, Vikas Constructions, Amol Constructions, and Bhumi Constructions, despite their original objectives not being related to managing toilets. Furthermore, certain individuals, such as Suresh Maru, were allegedly granted toilets illegally by reducing rent, resulting in a staggering loss of 7 crore 61 lakh 49 thousand rupees to the APMC market.

In November 2023, the Economic Offenses Branch of the Navi Mumbai Police filed a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act against eight individuals, including NCP MLA Shashikant Shinden and former officers of the market committee, at the APMC police station. Subsequently, the crime branch arrested three suspects involved in the case: Suresh Maru, Manesh Patil, and Sidram Katkadhond. Sanjay Pansare, the former director of the APMC Market, was arrested on Wednesday afternoon, followed by the arrest of Shivnath Wagh, Clerk of the Market Committee, on Thursday. Both have been remanded to police custody until April 26.
