MMR civic polls to test local leadership and party strength

The declaration of a reservation lottery for various municipal corporations has ignited political activity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), with civic elections for several local bodies expected to be announced soon. Recently, the state government declared long-pending elections for 246 municipal councils and 42 Nagar Panchayats, marking a significant step toward reinstating elected governance in urban and semi-urban areas.

Political observers believe that elections for major municipal corporations in the state — including Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan-Dombivali, and Navi Mumbai — could be held simultaneously, potentially reshaping local political equations. Over the past few months, local politics have gained momentum, with parties increasingly vocal about alleged irregularities in voter lists and civic issues to align with their state and national leadership.

With all civic bodies currently under the control of state-appointed administrators, discontent among local leaders has been growing. Politicians from across party lines are now raising civic and infrastructure-related issues, accusing the administration of inaction. In an interview with Newsband, former corporator and current BJP Navi Mumbai vice president, Raju Shinde, openly criticized the lack of major infrastructure development in Navi Mumbai over the past five years.

Meanwhile, the Congress and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) have been highlighting alleged duplication of voter registrations in several wards. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) — Sharad Pawar faction — has launched protests in Navi Mumbai to draw attention to the grievances of project-affected persons, mathadi workers, and residents, accusing the administration of neglecting their concerns.

A similar political churn is visible in Thane, Kalwa, and Kalyan-Dombivali, where parties are seen wooing each other’s former corporators and local leaders. In a recent development, seven former corporators from the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), all close aides of Jitendra Awhad, joined Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena.

As alliances shift and rivalries intensify, local politicians across MMR are working hard to safeguard their political strongholds ahead of the long-awaited civic polls. The upcoming civic elections are expected to set the tone for larger political realignments in Maharashtra’s urban landscape.
