Mira Road: Mira-Bhayandar is witnessing a concerning rise in dengue cases, with 40 confirmed infections reported so far. Health authorities warn that the numbers may increase sharply as rains intensify and mosquito breeding conditions worsen.
Data from the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) shows that dengue cases, which were limited to just three in March, have surged to 40 by mid-June. Malaria cases have also followed an upward trend, climbing from 21 in March to 54 in May, indicating a possible outbreak if timely intervention is not ensured.
The seasonal combination of stagnant water, poor drainage, and humid weather has created ideal conditions for mosquito breeding. In response, MBMC has ramped up anti-mosquito efforts, including public awareness campaigns, insecticide spraying, and sanitation initiatives. Water purification measures have also been introduced in vulnerable areas.
Municipal medical officer Dr. Nandkumar Lahane stressed the importance of public participation. “Though current figures are lower than the same period last year, the threat remains. People must stay alert and follow preventive measures,” he said. These include eliminating standing water, using mosquito repellents, and seeking prompt medical help if symptoms like high fever, headache, or body aches occur.
Meanwhile, civic leaders have criticised the administration’s response. Former House Leader Rohidas Patil called for the deployment of fogging machines, claiming that the ongoing spraying via tempos has not curbed the mosquito population effectively. Residents have echoed similar concerns, questioning the quality and impact of the chemicals being used.
