Mahavitaran seeks licence to supply power in Mumbai

Bhayandar: The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), also known as Mahavitaran, has submitted a petition to the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) seeking licence to distribute electricity in key parts of Mumbai and Mira-Bhayandar region.

Mahavitaran aims to supply power in areas from Colaba to Mahim, Bandra to Dahisar, Vikhroli to Mankhurd, and other adjoining suburbs. Currently, power in these regions is distributed by BEST (public utility), Adani Electricity, and Tata Power. MSEDCL is seeking a parallel licence that would allow it to operate alongside the existing providers.

Though it currently serves Mulund and Bhandup in Mumbai, Mahavitaran handles electricity distribution across most of Maharashtra. The petition has been filed under provisions of the Electricity Act, 2003, and relevant MERC regulations.

Mahavitaran is among the world’s largest power distributors, serving over 3.17 crore consumers with infrastructure that includes 4,230 substations and nearly 10 lakh transformers. It supplies 26,000 MW daily, while Mumbai’s demand is around 4,000 MW.

With large-scale infrastructure projects and a growing need from residential, commercial, and industrial sectors — especially power-intensive data centers — Mumbai’s electricity demand is projected to rise sharply. MSEDCL has already signed power purchase agreements to increase capacity to 81,000 MW over the next five years, focusing on affordable green energy.
