In the wake of rising temperatures and scorching heat gripping the region, lemons have emerged as a sought-after commodity in the city. Citizens are grappling with the soaring prices of lemons, which have reached record high levels, making the tangy fruit a luxury for many.

According to the retail market, the cost of a single lemon has skyrocketed to Rs. 10 per piece, marking a significant increase compared to previous months. This surge has left consumers astounded, with some resorting to rationing their lemon usage.

Wholesale markets have experienced a corresponding spike in lemon prices, driving up costs across the board. The current economic landscape, characterized by low incomes, exacerbates the strain on households already grappling with financial constraints.

The surge in demand for lemons, attributed to their cooling properties amidst the sweltering heat, has further exacerbated the situation. Additionally, lemons play a crucial role in various culinary practices, such as the preparation of lemon juice, as well as in extracting sugarcane juice.

Varsha Sadanand Devkar, a lemon vendor said. "We have been selling lemons for the last 50 years. However, with the onset of April, prices have surged. Presently, a single lemon fetches Rs. 10 per piece while we offer 3 pieces of lemon for Rs. 25 and 6 for Rs. 50”.
