Fresh graduates face tough job market

The gap between education and real-world job demands

Just wrapped up college and staring at the job market? It is not quite the smooth ride you might expect. Even though the economy is bouncing back after the pandemic, finding a steady, good job still feels like a bit of a maze.

Right now, around 7% of people in India don’t have jobs. But if you look at young folks, especially between 15 and 29 years old, the numbers are tougher, in some cities, nearly 1 in 5 can’t land a job. What’s more, most available jobs aren’t in big, steady companies. Instead, a lot of new grads end up in temporary gigs or informal work, where job security is almost non-existent.

A major hurdle? Almost half the graduates don’t have the skills employers are actually after. Even though more students are working on their job readiness, what’s taught in college does not always match what companies want.

IT jobs, think software coding, data work, AI, still attract many fresh grads. But hiring has slowed a bit, since companies are automating more. Other areas like consumer goods, insurance, pharma, and research are opening up more spots too. Freelancing is becoming a real option, especially for creative and tech-savvy folks. Plus, cities like Jaipur and Hyderabad are emerging as new job hubs beyond the usual big metros.

Government jobs remain popular but are hard to get due to tough competition and difficult exams.

Many grads struggle because their education is heavy on theory, but light on real-world skills. So, a lot end up taking jobs that don’t quite match what they studied, just to make ends meet. On top of that, soft skills like good communication and teamwork, things employers care about, don’t always get enough focus in school.

There is also a noticeable gap between job chances in cities versus smaller towns or villages. City grads generally find it easier to get hired.

To tackle this, the government has launched programs like Skill India and the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana, aimed at training millions and teaching skills companies want. They are also pushing schools and colleges to add skill training alongside regular courses. Still, there is plenty of work to do to make sure these efforts actually help grads find good jobs.

If you have just finished college, focus on learning skills that are in demand, like coding, AI, or digital marketing. Getting hands-on experience through internships or freelance projects really helps. And don’t be afraid to move to cities where more jobs are popping up, instead of sticking only to your hometown.

Experts expect the job market to grow by about 9% this year, especially in IT, retail, and AI fields. But competition will remain stiff, and technology will keep changing what kinds of jobs are out there. Those who keep learning, build practical experience, and stay flexible will be the ones who get ahead.
