Residents demand action on habitat preservation

Another distressing incident involving the death of a flamingo has reignited concerns among environmental activists in the city. The demise of a juvenile flamingo, witnessed by a resident of NRI Complex, has stirred outrage, shedding light on the deteriorating conditions of their habitat and the apparent negligence of authorities.

Eyewitness accounts reveal a tragic encounter on Palm Beach Road, Nerul, where a speeding vehicle struck the helpless bird, leaving it fatally injured. Despite efforts to save the avian, it succumbed to its injuries before receiving adequate medical attention. The incident underscores the pressing need for measures to safeguard the habitats of migratory birds, particularly flamingos, in Navi Mumbai.

The drying up of DPS Lake, once a sanctuary for these majestic birds, has compounded concerns among environmentalists. Blockages in intertidal flow channels have led to the lake's desiccation, disrupting the natural habitat of flamingos and other avian species. Despite repeated appeals to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and the Forest Department, little action has been taken to address these critical issues.

Rekha Shankhala, an impassioned environmental activist, laments the inaction of authorities in preserving DPS Lake and its vital ecosystem. Calls for the urgent restoration of intertidal water flow channels and the protection of wildlife habitats have gone unanswered, jeopardizing the lives of countless flamingos and migratory birds.

The "Save Mangroves, Save Flamingos" coalition continues to advocate for the preservation of DPS Lake and the implementation of proactive measures to mitigate further harm to the avian population. Urgent action is needed to reverse the drying trend of the lake and protect the diverse wildlife that calls it home.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that one injured flamingo that was rescued from TS Chanakya is now with RARE members and is being looked after.
