Vashi: On December 23, the Air Quality Index (AQI) at Kopripada–Vashi was recorded at 126, categorising the area as “moderate” under Central Pollution Control Board standards. Data from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) identified PM10 as the primary pollutant. However, residents argue that these figures do not accurately reflect on-ground conditions.
Nayan Mehta, a 20-year-old Vashi resident, spoke about recurring discomfort caused by pollution. “Yes, I have experienced burning eyes and a persistent cough on days when the air looks hazy. It’s uncomfortable.”
He said, “I would rate the air quality as poor today. Compared to last year, it seems to have worsened, with more haze and pollution.” He attributed the problem to traffic, saying, “The main source of pollution in my neighbourhood is vehicular emissions from heavy traffic. While authorities have taken steps, stricter emission norms and better public transport are needed.”
Sahil Mojar echoed similar concerns, highlighting how pollution affects daily routines. “Sometimes we do feel problems like burning eyes and coughing, especially on days when the air looks very smoky or dusty. We also feel more tired than usual on such days.”
Rifa Faquih, a 21-year-old who lives near Kopripada, pointed to health issues and reduced visibility. “In my house, one or the other is sick for a month because of the weather conditions.” She added, “During morning or late-night, I am unable to see beyond 500 metres due to pollution. The major reasons are deforestation and construction.”
Despite AQI levels remaining ‘moderate’ on paper, residents believe pollution is increasing and are urging authorities to take stricter action and implement long-term solutions to protect public health.
