Mira Road: In a shocking incident that has sparked outrage in Mira Road’s Naya Nagar locality, a group of 8 to 10 men, including known history-sheeters Sonu Mental, Shahnawaz Khan, and Adnan, allegedly carried out a brutal assault on Kaif Khan, son of senior journalist Aftab Khan.

The attack reportedly occurred near the controversial Saturday Market, which has long been under scrutiny for illegal operations and extortion.

“A case has been registered against 8 to 10 individuals involved in the attack. An investigation is underway, and appropriate action will be taken,” Amar Jagdale, Sr PI, Naya Nagar police, confirmed.

The gang has been extorting money from illegal hawkers in the area to run the Saturday Market. Aftab Khan, who has been vocal against this unlawful setup, had previously raised concerns about the criminal activities surrounding the market through his news channel. The attack on his son is now being viewed as an attempt to silence dissent.

“This is not just an attack on a young man—it is an attack on press freedom and lawful resistance,” said journalist Shashi Sharma, condemning the incident.

“Aftab Khan has always raised his voice against the illegalities of the Saturday Market. It’s evident these goons fear no law,” said Sharma.

Aftab Khan has also expressed grave concerns over safety. “This gang operates openly in the lane. I fear for my life and that of my family,” he said.

Adding to the concern, he stated, “Despite the presence of municipal-appointed bouncers meant to prevent illegal vendors, the Saturday Market is completely overrun. There’s hardly space to walk. If a child tries to pass through, these criminals can assault him in public—this is a total breakdown of law and order.”

Aftab Khan expressed gratitude to the Mira-Bhayandar Vasai-Virar (MBVV) Police for their swift response. “I thank the MBVV Police for their cooperation. I hope justice will be served and such lawlessness will not be tolerated further.”

Concerns are also being raised about criminal elements operating under the guise of hawkers. “There is a growing trend of illegal hawkers engaging in criminal behavior. The police must act strictly to ensure such incidents do not repeat,” said Veerbhadra Konapure, a social activist.
