A cohesive and collective bowling effort led by pacers paved the path for the JSW and GMR co-owned franchise Delhi Capitals to register an impressive six-wicket win over former champions Gujarat Giants after being set a target of 90 in their seventh league match of the ongoing TATA IPL 2024 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Wednesday night.

DC pacers justified their skipper Rishabh Pant's decision to field first after winning the toss. Mukesh Kumar bagged three wickets, while Ishant Sharma and of spinner Tristan Stubbs scalped two wickets apiece to bowl out the home side for just 89 in 17.3 overs, their lowest total in the tournament, despite Rashid Khan’s valiant 31. Ex Indian pacer Ishant in fact took two key wickets inside the power play including that of rival skipper Shubman Gill (8) and David Miller (2), while Mukesh castled opener Wriddhiman Saha (2) with the fifth ball of his opening spell. The run out of Sai Sudharsan (12) with a direct throw from the mid-wicket region by Sumit Kumar at the bowler's end didn’t help GT cause as they were reduced to 20 for 4 by the fifth over. A double wicket over strike by part time off spinner Tristan in his only over and the ninth of the innings further dented GT’s effort of a decent score, before Rashid slammed two boundaries and one six during his 24 ball stay at the crease before edging one behind the wicket to Rishabh off Mukesh who latter send back his Afghan team mate  Noor Ahmad (1) two balls later to end GT’s innings in 17.3 overs.

Delhi Capitals then chased down the target in just 8.5 overs, with contributions from Jake Fraser-McGurk (20 off 10 balls), Abishek Porel (15 off 7 balls), Shai Hope (19 off 10 balls) and skipper Rishabh Pant (16 not out off 11 balls).

This was Delhi Capitals' third win of the season. They have moved up to the sixth position in the points table with six points in seven matches.

Reflecting on the performance, Delhi Capitals' Bowling Coach James Hopes said, "I think tonight was one of those nights, boys started well with the ball and then everything went our way.  It was good to finish the game like we did with the bat as well."

He further added, "It's been a good night. But we've got a pretty quick turnaround to our next game. So, the boys will enjoy this tonight and then start getting ready to get back home to Delhi finally."
Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals' pacer Mukesh Kumar, who returned with the figures of 3/14 in 2.3 overs said, "We came well prepared for this match, and this win is very important for us going forward into the tournament. I think the early breakthroughs were important as they gave us the momentum."

"I enjoyed bowling in the last four overs, and I knew I was going to bowl the last two, so came with the plans," he added.

Shubman Gill, GT  Skipper lamented that his team’s batting and batting performance was under par today, and it was crucial that they move past this and come back stronger. “The pitch itself was alright; the dismissals were more about poor shot selection than anything else. With the opposition chasing just 89, they were obviously in a strong position—unless we had something extraordinary like a double hat-trick. We're only at the halfway mark of the season, having won three games so far. Based on our track record from the last couple of years, we're hopeful to secure another 5-6 wins from our next seven matches”  said Shubman Gill.

Rishabh Pant,  DC Skipper and Player of the match was quite pleased about his team’s allround performance and said “ We've been focusing on adopting a champion's mindset, and I'm really happy to see our team embody that on the field. Our bowling was definitely one of the best performances thus far. It's still early in the tournament, so there's room for individual improvement. My main focus, coming back from rehab, was just to return better than before. Before the chase, we discussed aggressively going after the target to make up for earlier losses in run rate. We love playing in Ahmedabad—the stadium and the vibe here are fantastic, and we're looking forward to more games in this environment. Right now, we want to enjoy this victory, take it one game at a time, and continue learning and improving."

The Delhi Capitals will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in their next match of IPL 2024 at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Saturday.
