Thane: Known as the “City of Lakes,” Thane is set to add another remarkable landmark to its identity. The scenic Upvan Lake, already famous for its lush greenery and serene environment near the Yeoor Hills, will soon become home to a magnificent 51-foot-tall statue of Lord Vitthal. The grand statue will be inaugurated on October 31, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The initiative, conceptualized and driven by State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, aims to enhance the spiritual and cultural appeal of the area.
Upvan Lake has long been a popular destination for morning walks, jogging, and recreation among Thane residents. The Pune-based Ahilyadevi Holkar Ghat, built earlier under Sarnaik’s guidance, already attracts large crowds. Now, with the addition of the colossal Vitthal idol, the area is expected to become a major devotional and tourist attraction.
The statue has been sculpted by Kolhapur artist Satish Gharge. Surrounding the statue are beautifully arranged stone lamp towers (Deepmalas), which will illuminate the entire area in the evening. A floating stage has also been built in the lake for special performances. To mark the inauguration, a splendid firework show, followed by a spiritual discourse (Harikirtan) by noted preacher H.B.P. Nivrutti Maharaj Deshmukh (Indorikar), is planned. Thousands of devotees from the Warkari community are expected to attend, filling the lakeside with devotional fervour.
